Installation on the top of the retaining wall next to the Gateway Building has begun.
Removal of 100-year-old steam heating system continues. The removal of the existing District Steam Heating System involves the mitigation and removal of the existing asbestos containing steam pipes that have been serving Downtown Duluth for over 100 years. The removal of these pipes are being performed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor and environmental monitoring is performed to ensure worker and public safety.
The installation of storm sewer pipes has begun between 4th Ave. W. and 5th Ave. W.
What to Expect June 11-15

5th Avenue W Intersection Opening Date Adjustment
Due to additional work on an underground tunnel and the change in dates with MnDOT’s Mesaba Avenue Project, the City of Duluth has extended the opening date for 5th Ave. W intersection to July 7th.
Grandma’s Marathon will be utilizing a modified race course for the 2018-2020 events. The race reroute will follow Michigan Street from 4th Ave E to 5th Ave West during all three phases of the Superior Street reconstruction. On race day (Saturday June 16, 2018) Michigan Street will be closed to traffic from 5:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Duluth Police Department will issue its full event traffic advisory in the coming days to allow businesses, residents and guests to plan.
